About Us

Physical Education Unit is one of the service units at the University of Jaffna to provide sports facilities and encourage all students to take part in sports activities from the inception of this University.

The Activities of the Physical Education Unit:
  • Providing Sports Facilities
  • Organising the friendly matches and tournaments
  • Maintaining sports articles
  • Providing opportunities to participate at the Inter University and World University Games
  • Developing the students’ personality
  • Regulating the use of fund available for sports activities
  • Affiliating with out side sports bodies and coordinating with them
  • Conducting Colors Awarding Ceremony
OUR HISTORY…
When the Jaffna University was established in October 1974 the University functioned both at Vaddukkoddai Premises and at Thirunelvely Premises. Physical Education Unit also was established in 1974. The students at the Vaddukkoddai premises had an advantage over the students of the Thirunelvely premises, because they were able to make use of sports facilities available at the undergraduate and collegiate section of the Jaffna College. The facilities at the Thirunelvely remained static for a considerable time and resources available were also limited. Physical Education Unit started its sports activities only with soccer in the early part of 1975. The first Sports Council was formed in April 1976. The first Colours Nite was held on 17th of June 1978. First time the Freshers’ Meet was organised in the University in 1993 and also flags were introduced for easy identification in Fresher’s Athletic Meet.
In 1975 sports facilities were available at Thirunelvely premises and vaddukkoddai premises as follows:

The sports activities were conducted at the main university premises from the inception of University of Jaffna and as the activities developed and more games were introduced from year to year.

Mr. H. Vincent Fernando was appointed as a first instructor and Miss. V. Sivagnanam was appointed as a first instructor to the unit. At the time three labourers were available at the unit. Mr. C. Thiyagarajah was appointed as the first Director of Physical Education Unit in 1991/1992 academic year in the contract basis. Now one Director, three instructors, four instructresses, one Computer Applications Assistant, three Groundsman, one Labourer and two Casual Labourers are available to the Unit. At this present playground Courts for Tennis, Basketball, Netball, Hockey, Football, Cricket and Thachchi had been setup. There are also Weightlifting Room, Karate Room, Body Strengthen Room and Table Tennis Room at the Ground and Badminton Court which is at the Student Complex.
